□ Next month, heads of the Railways will be gathered together in Seoul, at the Conference of the General Directors of OSJD Railways.
□ KORAIL(Acting President and CEO : Chung, In-soo) is holding “the 34th Conference of the General Directors of OSJD Railways” at Lotte Hotel Seoul, from April 8th to 12th.
⁕ OSJD stands for “Organisation for Cooperation of Railways“ in Russian Language
□ In June 1956, OSJD was established to coordinate international railway transport between Europe and Asia. This organisation consists of 29 member states with railway operators, such as ROK, Russia, China, and Countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
ㅇ OSJD takes charge of the agreements on and the principles of the operation of the international railway transportation via Trans Eurasian Railway routes such as TSR or TCR.
□ The General Directors Conference, one of the most authoritative conferences in the international railway sector, is an official OSJD event held every year to cover major issues related to operating Trans Eurasian Railway. The 34th Conference is especially meaningful as is the very first OSJD event held in the ROK since the accession to the OSJD in June 2018.
□ KORAIL expects to welcome 300 guests including delegates from railway operators in East Europe and Central Asia (Russia, China, Mongolia, Poland, Kazakhstan) and experts from railway institutions.
□ “Toward the Future of Peace and Prosperity” is the Slogan of the 34th OSJD General Directors Conference, where last year’s performances in the five OSJD Commissions (inc. Cargo Traffic, Passenger Traffic) and future plans for the operation of the OSJD are shared and discussed for further active cooperation of the railways.
ㅇ From April 8th to 12th, the delegates will be discussing the current issues and ways to enhance cooperation in operation of the Trans Eurasian Railway transportation, namely international railway services or improving customs. Visitors can also experience the cutting-edge technologies of the Korean companies in the railway and logistics sector as well as Korean culture at the conference venue.
□ The Republic of Korea made tireless efforts to join OSJD in order to strengthen cooperation of the railway sector with other OSJD Member States.
ㅇ Since KORAIL’s affiliate membership in OSJD in March 2014, it made a strenuous effort for the ROK’s accession to OSJD by hosting several OSJD events, such as General Directors Conference and Meeting on Cargo Traffic in 2015. However, the proposal of the ROK’s accession could not be realised as ROK failed to gain unanimous support from all member states.
ㅇ In June 2018, the Republic of Korea has finally joined OSJD at the Ministerial Conference in Kyrgyzstan with unanimous consent from all members, powered by peaceful atmosphere on the Korean Peninsula thanks to the inter-Korean Summit and the US-DPRK Summit.
ㅇ Members of OSJD approved for KORAIL’s host of the Conference next month at the 29th Conference of the General Directors of OSJD Railways held in Pyongyang.
□ Therefore, KORAIL was able to become one of the railway operators on 280,000km length of the Trans Eurasian Railway.
ㅇ And it became able to participate in the major OSJD Agreements for railway transportation through the continental railway.
□ Cheong, In-soo, the acting president and CEO said “KORAIL will not spare any efforts in hosting the 34th Conference of the General Directors of OSJD Railways, as is the very first major international conference since the ROK’s accession to OSJD. And this event will serve as a venue where the Korean railway sector showcases its world-leading technologies and introduces its vision towards the connected Trans Eurasian Railway Network”.
